The 5 Biggest Nutrition Mistakes People Make

Updated: Jul 4

And how to fix them

I’ve said it many times before, but when it comes to health and nutrition, we get a TON of conflicting information.

And we settle into habits that, while well-intentioned, don't always serve us.

Busy lives and years of mixed messages lead to inconsistent, often unhealthy habits.

Here are the 5 biggest nutrition mistakes I see my clients making (and how to fix them):

✅ 1. Not prioritizing protein

Most people start the day with toast, cereal, or just coffee — and end up chasing hunger all day. 👉 Without enough protein, it’s harder to control blood sugar, cravings, and energy.

Fix: 🥩Build your meals around a solid protein source first — then add fiber, fat and starch.

✅ 2. Not chewing food thoroughly

Rushing meals or eating distracted leads to poor digestion and feeling unsatisfied. 👉 Chewing is the first step in digestion, and most folks barely do it.

Fix: 🧘‍♂️Slow down. Chew each bite 15–20 times. Put your fork down between bites. (Yes, really.)

✅ 3. Eating late at night or right before bed

Late-night meals spike blood sugar, mess with sleep quality, and interfere with fat metabolism. 👉 Your body needs time to digest before you rest.

Fix: 🛌Try to finish dinner at least 2–3 hours before bed. A short walk after dinner helps too.

✅ 4. Eating too many refined grains and processed carbs

Cereal, bread, crackers, granola bars — they spike your blood sugar and leave you hungry again fast. 👉 Even “whole grain” versions often aren’t much better.

Fix: 🍞 Swap processed carbs for real-food carbs like sweet potatoes, squash, lentils, or fruit.

5. Drinking your calories

Sweet coffee drinks, sodas, smoothies, energy drinks, sports drinks — they add up fast.

👉 Liquid calories don’t satisfy your hunger the same way solid food does.

Fix: 🚰Choose water, spa water, or unsweetened tea or coffee. Save the calories for real food that fuels you.

The good news? Every one of these mistakes is fixable.

And when you start making even one or two of these changes — 👊 You’ll feel the difference.

✅ More stable energy.

✅ Fewer cravings.

✅ Better sleep and digestion.
